English Guided Self-Placement Survey

This guided self-placement (GSP) tool is designed to help you select the most appropriate writing course that best meets your needs, abilities, and program requirements.

Students entering BTC already use a variety of writing practices and strategies, so it is our mission to build upon these to support students for the complex reading, thinking, and writing tasks that awaits them in all their college classes and beyond. To start the process of determining the best placement for you, complete the following survey.

How does this process work?

Our guided self-placement survey asks you to:

  • Section A: Reflect on Academic Writing Knowledge from Previous Coursework

  • Section B: Practice Critical Reading Strategies with College-Level Texts

  • Section C: Complete a Self-Inventory of Writing Fundamentals

Based on your responses, a recommendation for placement into an English and/or Reading class will be suggested after completing all three sections.
