What is "We are IT"

Across the state of Ohio on Friday, November 13, 2009, many college’s will be hosting “We Are IT” conferences for girls in grades 8-10. The purpose of this conference is to introduce girls to the IT field and break down the stereotype that many girls have by thinking the field is just for male “geeks”. In 2007, Belmont Technical College had close to 100 girls from middle and high schools in our service district. We had 6 stations the girls rotated through which included Photoshop, Alice Programming, Networking, Cableing, Virus Dection, and Socializing . In addition we had 3 speakers and “Lunch Buddies”. The lunch buddies were area female IT workers that had lunch with girls. The "Lunch Buddy" would tell about her education and work experience in the IT field and then answer any questions these girls might have for them. The 2008 conference had 122 girls and covered many of the same topics for this new bunch of girls and 2009 hopes to be much of the same.
