Associate of Science (ASG)

View the required classes for the Associate of Science.

The AS degree parallels the first two years of liberal arts coursework in a Bachelor of Science degree (or in alternate degrees like Engineering, Business, or Agriculture), leading to a range of possible majors in mathematics and natural/physical sciences, to be completed in the third and fourth years of work towards a bachelor’s degree.

For students who have a general interest in sciences, the Associate of Science degree is preferable over the AA degree.  The AS degree will provide a broad knowledge of arts and humanities, as well as social and behavioral sciences, but will include more concentration in mathematics and the natural and physical sciences.  A range of elective courses offers the flexibility to explore areas of interest before deciding on a specific major program in science or a related field for completion at your selected four-year college.

The Associate of Science degree requires a minimum of 94 quarter credit hours for graduation.  This requirement includes a selection of general education courses and 20 quarter credit hours in electives.  The maximum number of quarter credit hours is 103.  To see the categories of courses and range of options available, check out the List of Course Requirements and Electives for AS Degree.

Free electives may be used to fulfill four-year institutional prerequisite requirements within programs.  Free electives may be selected from any transferable college-level course offered by Belmont.  You must take care to select transferable courses wisely, as prescribed by your target four-year institution, in consultation with Advising.

Belmont College will have concentrations available in the future.  If an area of concentration is desired, a student will be able to complete a minimum of 16 quarter credit hours in the concentration, plus enough electives to complete the 95-hour requirement.  In the meantime, you could create your own partial concentration, by selecting related courses as electives, as permitted by the requirements for each category.

To envision a program and plan your options, check out the Suggested Course Sequence for AS Degree.   In preparation for semester conversion, adhering to the Suggested Course Sequence will be mandatory, to prevent inconvenience and duplication of course materials across courses.

Learning Outcomes:

Interdisciplinary learning is the fundamental strength and value of a liberal arts education. The formulation of outcomes is based on recognition of the transformative potential of higher education in the liberal arts and an appreciation of how the knowledge gained (in particular, human understanding) leads to actions. Outcomes will be assessed in the Associate of Science degree through a portfolio process that will allow students to achieve individualized goals, in keeping with their chosen interdisciplinary pat of study.
