| If you or a family member are considering enrolling for classes at Belmont Technical College, applying for financial aid can help you make a college education a reality.
The cost of a college education can include: tuition, fees, books, and room and board charges. The good news is that there are state and federal programs in which the vast majority of colleges participate that help make a post-secondary education affordable.
What is financial aid? When it comes to college costs, financial aid refers to scholarships, grants, loans or work study awarded to an individual to help pay for college.

Loans awarded to the student through the federal government are typically low-interest loans designed to cover the amounts not included by other forms of aid. Some loans can be deferred until after the student is no longer taking courses (at least at a half-time level – typically 6 credit hours per quarter), and there are also government and private loans available to parents, as well.
Work Study is a work program for students to earn money through a job on campus. This allows the student to earn a paycheck, and a portion of their earnings is deposited directly into their account balance at the college. |
| Scholarships can be either internal (awarded by the college) or external (awarded by an entity other than the college) and are based on many factors, including: grades, test scores, essays, interviews, financial need, residency, community service record, or a combination of any or all of these. |
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is an important document because it is how most colleges determine dollar amounts awarded through the various forms of financial aid. This form is often required by colleges in order for you to receive any financial aid at all. There is plenty of help available from most colleges to make sure you complete the form in an accurate and timely manner. |
| Grants are awarded by the college, the state, or the federal government and are based on financial need. Grants typically do not have to be paid back. By applying as early as possible, you can ensure that you receive the highest amount for which you may qualify because some grants are awarded on a ‘first come/first served’ basis. |
Many students avoid higher tuition and expensive room & board charges by taking classes at Belmont Technical College for their first two years, then transferring to a four-year college or university. |
