Tuition, Fees, Cost Estimates

You are considered "Officially Enrolled" when your tuition and fees are paid in full. Tuition and Fees are due in full by the date indicated on the College Calendar. Tuition and fees are subject to change without notice.

BTC adjusts tuition and fees annually, according to state regulations and program and course costs. Adjustments are effective as soon as they are implemented, which may be during the academic year—so check here for up-to-date information.

Fall Quarter Tuition & Fees are estimated each year and then are recalculated to reflect increases approved by the Legislature and Board of Trustees after those decisions are finalized, usually by early August. Updated student account balances will be emailed before the Fall Tuition and Fee due date.

Tuition and Fee Payment Due Dates

*Fall Quarter Running Start students are given until the Friday after Labor Day due to High School staff availability during the summer. Signed Running Start Enrollment Verification and payment due on the Friday after Labor Day.

Bellingham Technical College tuition rates are set according to the Washington Community College Tuition Rate Schedule based on legislative authorization provided in ESHB 1087 Section 604(4).

Administrative, Operating, Building, and Student Approved Fees

    Are included as part of your tuition

Program and Class Fees

    Address distinct and specified costs such as lab assistants, supplies, materials, equipment, rentals, software licensing, replacement and upgrade, maintenance, and other operational costs.

Online Class Fees

    Online classes cost an additional $9.39 per credit. (2017-2018 rate)

Additional Costs

    Students are responsible for purchasing books, materials and supplies, as well as uniforms and tools if applicable for your program of study.

Self Support Classes

    Self Support classes at BTC do not charge any tuition, but charge the whole class cost as fees. These classes are not subject to residency requirements, are not eligible for tuition waivers, and have a different refund schedule - see refund policy.

    $59-120 - Certified Background for Nursing Assistant, Practical Nursing, Radiologic Technology, Registered Nursing, Surgery Technology, and Veterinary Technician students

What does Running Start cover?

Running Start eligible credits are tuition free!

For you to be eligible for Running Start each quarter

  • Your Running Start Enrollment Verification form must be complete to be valid.
  • The number of college credits you are allowed for Running Start at BTC is determined by your High School and is based on the number of high school FTE (full time equivalent) you are attending your High School.

For your classes to be Running Start eligible

Each class must meet all of these guidelines to qualify as Running Start and tuition free (but there are fees).
  • College level class (100-400 level, not below 100, not in 900 level)
  • Credit class – for College credit (not non-credit or non-graded)
  • State Support (not self-support)
  • Approved by the high school on the Running Start Enrollment Verification Form
  • Required as part of the program you are admitted into
  • Within the allowed hours/credits (FTE’s) indicated on the Running Start Enrollment Verification Form
  • You will be attending class all quarter (not challenging the class – If you challenge a class, you will be required to pay full price.)
  • Class is taken during Fall, Winter, or Spring quarters (Running Start is not available Summer quarter. Summer students pay full price.)

What cost do Running Start students pay?

Running Start students pay tuition for credits which are not Running Start eligible. Students pay program and class fees; for books, materials and supplies; and for uniforms and tools.

Tuition

    Running Start students are charged resident rate tuition for credits which are not Running Start eligible. After Running Start eligible credits, the next 10 credits are at the 1-10 credit resident rate; with any additional credits after that at the 11-18 credits resident rate. Many programs at BTC require more than 15 credits per quarter. See Tuition Rates and Cost Estimates.

      Low Income? Contact the Running Start advisor at rstart@btc.ctc.edu or call 360-752-8385 if you think you may qualify for the Low Income Running Start Waiver which waives the Running Start Fee.

      Program & class fees address distinct and specified costs such as lab assistants, supplies, materials, equipment, rentals, software licensing, replacement and upgrade, maintenance, and other operational costs specific to the class and/or program.

    Online Class Fees

      You are responsible to pay online fees if you register for online classes. Online classes cost an additional $9.39 per credit. (2017-2018 rate)

      Running Start students are responsible for purchasing books, materials and supplies, as well as uniforms and tools if applicable for your program of study.

2017-2018 Tuition and Fee Estimates by Degree Program

This document provides estimates of average tuition and program and class fees each quarter by program.

Estimated Books, Tools and Supplies Costs by Program

When estimating costs, check our BTC Campus Store for more information regarding books, materials, supplies, uniforms, and tools applicable for your program of study.

To Calculate your Tuition

  • Start by calculating your first 10 credits at the "Credits 1-10" rate.

  • If you take more than 10 credits, your 11th credit is discounted.

    For example, for 15 credits

    1. calculate 10 credits at the "Credits 1-10" rate
    2. then calculate 5 credits at the "Credits 11-18" rate
    3. add these figures together

  • If you take more than 18 credits, all three rates are used to calculate your total tuition.

Credit Status

  • 6 credits = part-time
  • 9 credits = 3/4 time
  • 12 credits = full-time

Typical Full-Time Credit Load

  • Academic Classes only - 12-15 credits per quarter
  • Vocational Instruction - 15-22 credits per quarter (includes hands-on lab time)
  • Maximum credits per quarter - 26 credits
  • Dean permission required to exceed 26 credits

Baccalaureate Students

  • Taking Upper Level (300 and 400 level) classes only - calculate as indicated above
  • Taking Upper Level (300 and 400 level) classes AND Lower Level (100 and 200 level) classes - calculate each level separately as indicated above, then add together
  • If you are taking 10 or more Baccalaureate 300 and 400 level classes AND ALSO taking 100 and 200 level classes in the same quarter, email registration @btc.edu for us to check that you are not being overcharged.
